How to manage efficiently Google Adwords campaigns with limited budgets?

In this post, I am going to reveal the great secret that account managers of Google Adwords use, when they are dealing with campaigns with limited budgets.

As you already know, the main task of an Google Adwords account manager is to analyze statistics that the Google Adwords tool shows us and make decisions to optimize the accounts. Therefore, the most important issue in every Google Adwords campaign, whether the budget is limited or unlimited, is to have sufficient data. In other words collect enough data to be able to analyze and reach conclusions in order to make adequate actions.

We can only do this, when our keywords have sufficient data and there are clear statistics, so as Google Adwords account managers we can make one decision or another. Taking this as a premise, I think I have already given you the clue on how to handle Google Adwords accounts with limited budgets efficiently.

Don't worry if you have not yet discovered the secret, just continue reading. Well the secret is to collect sufficient data and as we have limited budget, we have to concentrate in a few keywords instead of having many. Therefore, the steps to follow are the following:

1: When we are planning a new Google Adwords campaign, one of the main things we have to do is come up with keywords. Generaly, we end up with lots of keywords. In this case, as we have a limited budget, we should only start off with few keywords, the ones we believe will have the best conversions or performance. On the other hand, if you already have a campaign running, you should start to pause those keywords that are not being effective and allow the other more relevant ones for your business to run and collect data.

2: Once you have few keywords running, you should start to analyse day to day what is happening. When you see that your keywords are not enough to reach the daily budget, add more. You can also think in raising your bids for the keywords that have low positions.

3: Once you collect enough data to analyse, you can start deciding which keywords to pause or which ones to raise or lower the CPC, etc.

4: Now you can activate more keywords, but remember to activate them little by little so all of them collect that essential data we need to be able to analyze their effectiveness and make better decisions,

5: You can do the same with the adds, segmentations or extensions that you have in your Google Adwords account.

To understand all this better, let's see a simple example and you will realize how this technique so widely used is true:

We have an account with 100 keywords and our budget is of 10€ a day. The average CPC is 0.50€. Therefore, in one day we can have up to 20 clicks. Let's suppose each click goes to a different keyword. We will still have 80 keywords without any data and possibly the ones that have received a click today, it will take a long time to collect sufficient data to be able to make decisions to optimize our account efficiently. On the other hand, if we only activate 8 keywords, we will be able to collect sufficient data in a few days. This will allow us to make well structured decisions to optimize our account from week one. Although if we would have started our campaign with the 100 keywords, our budget will be dispersed and to be able to collect data and make proper decisions would take us a while. Perhaps more than two months and when two months have passed and you have not had any results on your Google Adwords campaigns, you will probably decide to quit and think that online advertising in Google Adwords does not work. In addition, now you know that this is because the account has not been optimized correctly because you have not collected sufficient data.

In other words the great secret is:

DO NOT DISPERSE YOUR GOOGLE ADWORDS BUDGET, CONCENTRATE IT ON FEW KEYWORDS AND COLLECT SUFFICIENT DATA. ONLY THEN YOU CAN MAKE THE BEST DECISIONS TO OPTIMIZE YOUR ACCOUNT AND MAKE SURE IT WORKS WELL FROM THE BEGINNING.
